Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier

Color: Black raspberry red. Aroma: Complex with black fruit aromas (black cherry and black currant) some chocolate and toasty notes. Taste: Explosive black berry and pomegranate-like flavors with perfectly matched tannins that give the wine a long, lasting aftertaste.

Wine Spectator

A deft, expressive Shiraz, with a remarkably open texture that floats over just enough acidity to keep this refreshing and impeccably balanced. The flavors center on smoky, licorice-scented black cherry and mineral. Not like many other Aussie reds. Best from 2009 through 2015.

Score: 93. —Harvey Steiman, June 15, 2007.

Wine Advocate

Serious, backward, and formidably endowed, the 2005 Shyraz Lieu Dit Malakoff reveals notions of damp earth interwoven with plum, black raspberry, cherry, and currant fruit. Medium-bodied, pure, and elegant with good acidity, it will require 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 10-12 years. (89-91)

Score: 91. —Robert Parker, December 2006.

Wine Enthusiast

Although this wine is clearly darker and more intensely concentrated than its little sibling, with more capacity for aging, it’s also more stern and less pretty. Blueberry and plum fruit is set off by savory spice and meat notes, with firm tannins and the potential to evolve through 2015 or beyond.

Score: 90. —Joe Czerwinski, August 01, 2008.
