Carmenet was founded in the early 1980's with the acquistion of 280 acres of mountainous terrain high in a cleft of the Mayacamas Mountains. The rocky, volcanic soil and long, sunny days high above the valley fog, make this a perfect place for producing richly colored, intensely flavored, fragrant red wines. The rugged terraces of the hillside support four classic varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot, used in the making of Moon Mountain Estate Meritage Red and Dynamite Cabernet. Growing grapes in such a location is expensive and demanding. Some sites were carved out with blasts of dynamite; despite the difficulty, the results are rewarding. The winery, a twin turreted redwood building, blends with the surrounding beauty of the vineyards. Behind the winery, wine caves have been carved out of the volcanic rock. Their humidity and constant temperature provide optimum conditions for cellaring the wines. In addition to Bordeaux-style blends made from estate grapes, Carmenet produces distinctive wines from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion. Visit the Carmenet website.
