In 1998, the idea was raised about forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family. Initial enthusiasm was rapidly transformed into a project to produce a single wine combining French and Argentinean cultures, and two grapes varieties, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are the specialities of the two estates. The Catena family has produced wine for three generations, and draws on its familiarity with the soil and the high altitude Mendoza region, and also with its passion for the Malbec grape in order to select the finest vineyards. DBR contributed its centuries-old skill with the Cabernet Sauvignon grape, as well as its know-how in blending fine wines. The exchanges and selection work took place in 1999, and in 2000 producing a wine that is worth this alliance. This initial vintage is very limited in quantity. Commercialised at the end of 2002, it is like a sketch of what the two “parents†seek to create.
